ARTCUBE 2R2 presents the works of two leading Korean contemporary artists, Ha Taeim and Choi Youngwook, at this year’s Tokyo Gendai, exploring the intersection of Korean aesthetics and contemporary artistic language. Internationally recognized, including through the acquisition of his work by Bill Gates, Choi Youngwook has reinterpreted the traditional Korean aesthetic through contemporary painting, using the moon jar—a traditional Korean ceramic vessel—as his central motif. His signature series, Karma, delicately captures the moon jar’s rounded form and subtle surface cracks, moving beyond simple representation to reflect on the passage of time and the experience of life. During his studies in New York, Choi encountered a moon jar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its serene yet dignified presence left a lasting impression on him and became a defining subject throughout his artistic practice. The title Karma refers to action and the consequences of one’s actions, embodying the artist’s belief that the emotions and reflections evoked through viewing a work of art can, in turn, become part of one’s life. Within the tranquil surfaces of his paintings, Choi’s moon jars hold traces of time and stories of human experience, extending the sensibility of Korean aesthetics into a universal visual language. Ha Taeim is an abstract painter who has explored the possibilities of communication through color and rhythm. In her early works, she repeatedly drew, erased, and layered letters and language, examining the essence of communication. Gradually, she began to remove textual and figurative elements, turning instead to color and light as a means of creating a more sensory form of communication. This process led to her distinctive Color Band series: organic bands of color that move across the canvas, shaped around the axis of the artist’s body and structured through repetition and variation. Like melodies in music, these bands interact and resonate with one another, creating a distinctive spatial experience of color. Ha’s Color Bands go beyond the simple arrangement of colors. Their repeated, intersecting, and sometimes misaligned movements embody the artist’s embodied experience and memory of color. The spaces between the bands function as “passages of communication,” connecting the viewer with the work. More recently, Ha has expanded the Color Band beyond the boundaries of painting into spatial and installation-based works, exploring new possibilities where color, space, and the viewer’s experience converge. While carrying forward the lineage of Korean abstract painting, Ha has developed her own distinctive language of color, offering a contemporary perspective on the possibilities of abstraction. Although working from distinctly different approaches, the two artists reveal the diverse possibilities of Korean contemporary art through contrasting yet complementary languages of tradition and abstraction, restraint and rhythm. Choi Youngwook translates Korea’s traditional aesthetic and reflections on life into the symbolic image of the moon jar, while Ha Taeim explores sensory communication beyond language through color and rhythm. Through their works at Tokyo Gendai, ARTCUBE 2R2 introduces how the traditional aesthetics and contemporary sensibilities of Korean art continue to evolve into new and distinctive artistic languages.
